Microchipping

Here at Stilwell Animal Hospital & Equine Center, P.A., it is our utmost priority that your pet is safe and healthy. Modern technology now allows our pets more protection when they are lost or missing by implanting a microchip between the shoulder blades. The microchip is a tiny device about the size of a grain of rice that contains a unique radiofrequency specific to each chip. This tiny Microchip will contain all your contact information and your pet’s information, and is registered on a universal database. If someone finds your pet, any veterinary clinic or shelter will have a scanner that can read the frequency of the chip, which allows them to contact you about your pet. A microchip is the best method for insuring your pet returns to you, as it cannot be stolen or lost like a tag or collar can. We recommend placing a microchip in any animal not currently microchipped.

Microchip placement is a simple procedure with a needle and syringe, and it is easy to perform in the clinic. It may be easier on pets undergoing anesthesia for an elective procedure (spay or neuter), and we highly recommend placing a microchip at that time. Once the chip is placed, we keep a record of the microchip number in your pet’s medical record, and will send your contact information to the universal database. You will also get a tag with your pet’s microchip number on it to place on your pet’s collar for added protection.
